The largest freshwater island in the world, Ometepe is a highlight of any trip to Nicaragua. It has two volcanoes, one of them, Conceptión, a perfect cone rising to 1,610 m; the other, Volcán Maderas rises to 1394m. There are two main villages on the island on either side of Volcán Conceptión: Moyogalpa and Altagracia. Moyogalpa has the atmosphere of a tourist port; Altagracia, like other small villages on the island, is more charming.
Ometepe has the kindest people in Nicaragua, partly because the Revolution and the Civil War were never waged here. There are many indigenous petroglyphs in several locations on the island, the best being near Finca Magdalena.
